Tony Jantjies notched up 29 points as the Vodacom Blue Bulls thumped the MTN Golden Lions 50-26 (halftime 30-19) in the Vodacom Cup match at Ellis Park in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The Blue Bulls pivot kicked six conversions, four penalties and scored a try as the men from Pretoria ran riot in Johannesburg. It was a fantastic display by the flyhalf who directed the backline like a true general does his troops.

Jantjies slotted three penalties inside seven minutes as the visitors dominated the opening exchanges. Flank Wiaan Liebenberg went over for the first of his two tries in the ninth minute, which was converted by Jantjies, as the Bulls moved the ball from left to right and back left again.

The Lions hit back with their first try through fullback Ruhan Nel as the Bulls missed some timely tackles. Ashlon Davids, who contributed 16 points himself, converted the try to close the gap to nine points.

But the Bulls upped the ante, and the hosts had no answer to the sweeping open play of the visitors. The Bulls played some magnificent running rugby which resulted in Rohan Janse van Rensburg finishing off a lovely move, to restore the Bulls' 16-point lead.

Liebenberg scored his second try, again from lovely running rugby, in the 32nd minute, converted by Jantjies, as the Bulls were out of sight, leading 30-7.

Two quick tries by Davids and centre Harold Vorster just before halftime, meant that the home side only trailed by 11 points, but it was all the Bulls in the second half.

Left wing Heinrich Steyl scored a try shortly after Jantjies had knocked over his fourth penalty of the match, to extend the lead to 21 points.

The Lions must have thought that they had been given some reprieve when Janse van Rensburg tackled the man in the air and received a yellow card. But it was the Bulls who showed more patience and maturity to score a try through Jantjies in the 67th minute.

At 47-9, the Bulls were over the horizon and cantering away, but Davids went over for his second try of the afternoon, and converted it, to reduce the deficit to 21 points again.

But to rub salt in the wounds of the hosts, the Bulls were awarded a penalty try for consistent collapsing of the scrum in the 80th minute, to bring up the 50-pointer.
