Former African Bok Mzanywa dies
February 12, 2013
The South African Rugby Union was saddened to learn of the passing of former African Springbok Stanford Mzanywa, in the age of 68.

The former Buffaloes RFC winger attended Langa High School in the 1960’s and together with Norman Mbiko and Meshack Cushe played for the South African Schools XV. He later went on to represent Western Province in inter-provincial competitions at the age of 19 years.

His debut season for Western Province also saw him making his debut as a wing for the African Springboks in the inter-racial Test of the SA African Rugby Football Board against the South African Rugby Federation at City Park on 26 September 1964.

He went on to play five Tests, including one Test against the South African Coloured Rugby Football Board in 1965.

The Eastern Province Herald in 1966 described him as “a very fast wing” that was “just stopped inches short” and Imvo Zabantsundu described his contribution in match reports of the 1965 Test series as follows: “‘Border’ Mzanywa, the fastest wing today, had the big crowd on its feet, when he caught the defence on the wrong foot just outside his own half after receiving a pass from a full three-quarter movement and outstripped the defence in a sixty-yard dash to score under the post for Solly Mahote to convert”.

A memorial service will be held in Gugulethu on Thursday and his funeral will take place on Saturday. Condolences are extended to his family and relatives.
